The chief

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born and brought up in Blanchland, a remote village in Northumberland.

I then headed to the capital to study a joint honours BA degree in French and German at London University.

After working in London for a large German tour operator, I left in 1981 for Munich to take up a new position with a small specialist UK tour operator, which eventually became the leading UK specialist operator in Germany.

I spent almost 15 years in Europe working for a range of organisations, eventually setting up and developing my own business supplying German speaking markets with specialist UK Incoming Tour Operator services.

I had much success with this company, but after 25 years away from my home, I decided to return to the North East in 1996 to ensure my son could enjoy his education at a local North East school.

What is your role at The North East Regional Portal? (TNERP)

I’m chief executive of TNERP and the role is hugely varied and enjoyable.

We're building a new, innovative company to help businesses and people in the North East realise how much IT can help them, both at home and at work, and then support them to make positive changes. Click here for more.

What does your average day comprise?

Early starts, late finishes, lots of talking, lots of doing, and as few meetings as possible! I try and round my day off with an hour’s hard play with my family and dogs.

Why do you enjoy working and living in the North East?

The feeling of immense pride and belonging here in the North East.

Businesses here are passionate, creative and very hardworking, while being proactive and very down to earth. I also love stotties and Workie Ticket beer.

What is your dream or ambition?

To look forward to going to work every morning, and enjoying what I do. As I do now.

What is your greatest achievement?

Being a good mum.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

I love to read, play the piano, as well as running and orienteering.  I also enjoy spending time enjoying life with my family and friends.
