Readers of leading lifestyle magazine Condč Nast’s Traveller have voted NewcastleGateshead the easiest UK destination to get around. Over 91% of those who took part in the 2006 Readers’ Travel Awards voted NewcastleGateshead the UK’s most user-friendly city. NewcastleGateshead also came fourth over all in the favourite UK cities category just behind Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, the destination marketing agency for the area, said: “We are delighted to receive yet another accolade recognising why NewcastleGateshead is so popular amongst visitors. "To rank just behind the capital in the favourite UK cities poll is quite remarkable. “NewcastleGateshead is a very compact destinations making it particularly easy for people to get around on foot, but we also have an extensive public transport system which is a real asset to visitors wishing to experience our many attractions located throughout the area.” Bernard Garner, Director General of Nexus, said: "Excellent public transport is important not just to residents of a city but visitors as well, if we are to create a good impression. "Metro is a source of great pride and it can whisk you from Airport to city centre in 20 minutes, the shortest link of its kind in the UK. "Visitors I speak to are often impressed by the quality of Metro and the bus network - in particular Quaylink with its fast, frequent connection to Baltic, The Sage Gateshead and other attractions."
